Gimme a Mic (Disc2: Left Overs)
Philip Wesley Yates
In order for people to know my whole life story, I've decided to include my toss away tracks. If you buy this album and the next album, you will have my 100 songs that I came up with during my pre- [record-from-a-box-with-a-legit-mic-into] protools life. Some are perfect and beautiful exactly how they are, and some are just for if anyone wants to be there with me through the journey of the adventure. Imagine freedom, and 20oz. sodas, and easy food. Imagine open laptops and food and drinks on $300,000 grand pianos, me singing about death and then me singing and jamming to songs loudly where I don't say what you think I'll say. Imagine, each class was every other day, there was studying, reading, practicing, and the choice of going to my home church for the midweek service, which would mean me leaving pretty soon after classes were done-- or I could eat good, practice, and make this CD... Everything was bigger and better. Imagine being excited that your computer had a built in mic. Scratch another persons memory itch and be transferred to that time, with me in those practice rooms, or standing beside me holding a microphone up to a cassette tape player because I needed to turn my songs digital before I could reuse the cassette tape while not even capturing the audio properly. These are the un-songs, The leftovers, the recordings. Who knows what they are, where they'll go, and/or how they exist--you decide. But they were sung. Perhaps in a lonely night where there was mostly silence everywhere, in a practice room this was happening. Or maybe there were horn players doing their own thing, choirs rehearsing, stringed instruments tuning, accompanist stopping and talking and going back 6 measures so they could make sure the transition was good; And then there was me. Somehow through all that, I get remembered. Perhaps the people around me and the work ethic and the aggravation or glad feelings of everyone around me and their emotions seeped into me just a little bit. If so, here's a SnapShot of a different time and a different place where a bunch of irrelevant things get to become almost significant now in this collection of "The Left Overs."
